Adult Learners: Why a Non-Traditional Career Path Can Work

As an adult learner, your educational journey and career path do not have to look like the traditional college experience of getting a degree and then obtaining a job with that degree, and that is okay. You might be returning to school after years in the workforce, changing careers or raising a family.

Maybe you’re balancing a full-time job with your studies while you pursue your degree. Just remember that your path is valid, valuable and uniquely yours.

Adult Learners Know That There’s No Expiration Date on Professional Growth

It is easy to fall into the comparison trap, especially when you are surrounded by younger students. Social media also makes it seem like everyone else is further ahead in their lives.

Here is the truth, though: Your career path does not have to be traditional to work for you, because there’s no expiration date on professional growth.

You bring life experience, resilience, and real-world perspective to your educational and career goals. These qualities are just as important as degrees or titles.

Adult Learners’ Goals and Definition of Success Might Be Different

For many adult learners, academic or career success might mean:

  • Switching to a more meaningful or flexible career
  • Gaining new, career-relevant skills
  • Earning a degree you started years ago and always wanted to finish
  • Setting an example for your children or community
  • Doing something just for you, finally

These goals are deeply personal, powerful and incredibly motivating. Your unique goals deserve to be recognized and celebrated.

No One’s Career Path Is Linear

Maybe you have held multiple roles during your life: employee, parent, caregiver, entrepreneur or student. Maybe you have taken a break, started over or made a career pivot.

All of these scenarios make you adaptable. Adaptability is one of the most in-demand career skills career skills today.

There is no single timeline for figuring things out during your professional journey. What matters is that you take intentional steps toward a future that aligns with who you are now.

Don’t fret over what you “should” have done five, 10 or 20 years ago. The right career path looks different for everyone.

Adult Learners Redefine Success on Their Own Terms

You may not know exactly what you want your career path to look like. Maybe you’re pursuing a new field, or you’re still learning the ropes of the industry you’re in.

Ask yourself:

  • What kind of life am I building?
  • What kind of work will allow me to thrive personally and professionally?
  • How can my education help me realize my personal or career goals?

Whether you’re interested in a new title, more flexibility, or simply personal fulfillment, your personal success story is worth writing – and rewriting – as you grow.

There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Career Path

The courage and determination adult learners demonstrate is truly inspiring. No matter your path or timeline, remember that it is never too late to grow. Your career journey does not need to fit a mold; it just needs to fit you.
