Responding to an emergency medical situation can be chaotic, even for well-trained medical professionals. When multiple agencies respond, it can be difficult to establish proper command, leading to difficulties in providing medical care and services. That’s why it’s so important for emergency medical services (EMS) agencies to embrace an incident command system (ICS), says firefighter and paramedic Brad Davison.
ICS establishes a clear command structure so everyone on scene knows who’s in charge, giving the incident commander clear authority to delegate roles and responsibilities to other personnel. The result is less chaos and improved medical care, yet many EMS agencies have not adopted an ICS model.
