As a career coach, I find that among the most common reasons why a person leaves a job is to find something “better.” My response is typically, “What kind of better?” Salary aside, what are you really looking for?

There are a variety of reasons why people leave their jobs, oftentimes feeling that they are ready for bigger and better challenges. Other times, it is because they feel their position is a dead end with no room for growth. How can you tell which is which? Is the job truly a dead end, or have your stopped evolving?

The answer, quite often, is yes. Or should I say, it will be, if you don’t treat your job search as a project. As such, prior to jumping in and immediately sending out your resumes and applications, you should develop a plan.

In 2000, the New York Giants faced off against the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl. Despite the magnitude of the stage, there was not much I would consider memorable about the game. One thing I do remember about the game is Kerry Collins, New York’s quarterback, who threw an uncharacteristic four interceptions. As he left the field at the end of the game, with the camera fixed on his every move, his young son ran up to him. Collins scooped him up in his arms and said, “We’ll fight another day.”

As a career coach I am often asked to review resumes targeted for management positions, and it becomes my unfortunate duty to advise them that they have not listed any previous management experience or leadership roles that would qualify them. The question that always comes back to me is, “So, how do I get qualified?”

A couple of months ago, my wife and I welcomed two of our cousins over for dinner. The evening involved much laughter, and for the first time I was introduced to vegan pizza. In this context “introduced” means I saw it, though I am not yet brave enough try it. In addition to learning about various vegan cuisines, I also learned about my cousins’ differing philosophy on higher education. While both are neurosurgeons, Nancy firmly believed everyone should go to college, while Ronald was not convinced. I admit, I was shocked two physicians would have such differing opinions on a subject my wife and I have discussed more times than I can recall.

Kanye West last year described himself as a “creative genius” on the Jimmy Kimmel Show, a comment which, naturally, made him the object of much ridicule. Upon reviewing that interview, I emerged with a question. Are people uncomfortable with someone referring to themselves as a creative genius because they do not believe it is true, or is it because the average person is uncomfortable sharing space with unsolicited confidence?

The idea of virtual career fair is a relatively new concept. These days, just about anything can be facilitated through technology, and a career fair is no exception. We can pay our bills, go to classes, chat with friends, and even lock our front doors with a quick tap of a button. As a career coach, I am still asked, “What’s a virtual career fair,” and, “How does it work?” Although you are not meeting recruiters or hiring manager’s in-person, there are several positives to attending a virtual career fair, and all job seekers should take advantage of this unique opportunity.

It was incredible to see the amazing accomplishments that people had achieved: JD’s, Ph.D.’s, high-powered positions, babies and more. While I was re-learning about the people I grew up with, I started thinking about the ways one could use their childhood connections to grown and learn professionally. In addition to reconnecting, I was able to learn about the variety of industries and positions that my peers had entered and their many accomplishments, more so than through social media alone.
