We also offer a special congratulations to our 2024 student and alumni award winners. They have provided distinguished service and shown their immense dedication toward helping people in their communities, the nation, and the world.
President’s Award Winners: Rick Moore and Ryan Andersen
The President’s Award recognizes both a graduate and an undergraduate student. To qualify, the President’s Award winners must have distinguished themselves academically and made significant contributions to their nation and/or their community. This award recognizes a commitment to service, scholastic achievement, outstanding character and leadership.
This year’s winners are Rick Moore (graduate) and Ryan Andersen (undergraduate).
Rick Moore
In January 2024, Rick Moore graduated from American Military University (AMU) with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies and a 4.0 GPA.
During his academic journey, Rick worked as his Army unit’s Special Operations Combatives Program instructor. He has 11 years of Army service and has distinguished himself as a Special Operations Soldier with deployments to Poland, Kuwait, and Colombia.
Fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese and having a passion for Latin American cultures, Rick is pursuing a master’s degree in international relations to further expand his knowledge and expertise in global affairs.
After he retires from the Army, Rick plans to continue to serve his country as a diplomat by working for the U.S. Department of State as a foreign service officer. He would like to contribute to global peace, stability and cultural understanding.
Ryan Andersen
In April 2024, Ryan Andersen graduated with a bachelor’s degree in security management from AMU while maintaining a 4.0 GPU. A 100% disabled veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, he served from November 2002 to October 2011 as a marine science technician.
His service, marked by numerous awards, including multiple Coast Guard achievement medals, letters of commendation, and special operations ribbons, highlights his involvement in lifesaving, security, anti-terrorism, and emergency management missions. Of particular significance to him is the Outstanding Military Volunteer Award, a testament to his unwavering commitment to community service.
Ryan’s passion for service shines through his volunteer work with the Red Cross in the Texas Gulf Coast region. He is often found leading disaster action teams and mass care teams while serving as the information and planning coordinator for the region.
Ryan is known as an experienced safety, security, emergency preparedness, crisis management and disaster recovery expert. He has significantly contributed to multiple industries, specializing in business continuity, strategic planning, training development, environmental protection, security, and occupational safety. His innovative strategies have enhanced emergency response capabilities worldwide, influencing industry standards and best practices, especially for midstream oil and gas organizations.
Academic Scholar Award Winners
The Academic Scholar Award recognizes 10 graduates and undergraduates. For this award, the winners must exhibit leadership in their classrooms, maintain high GPAs, and show a high level of engagement and rapport with their instructors and peers.
Taylor Sparber: Arts, Humanities and Education, Graduate
Taylor Sparber graduated from American Public University (APU) in April 2024 with a master’s degree in Education: Higher Education in Student Affairs with a 4.0 GPA and a concentration in career coaching. She also holds a Life Coaching certificate from APU.
In addition, Taylor has other degrees such as an associate of science in general studies from Laurel Ridge Community College, and a bachelor’s degree cum laude in social work from Shepherd University. She has also been an active member of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) and Chi Sigma Alpha Honor Society.
Taylor works in the University’s Career Services department as a Certified Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) career coach, specializing in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) industries. Her diverse background includes roles in student life, residence life, and disability services, providing her with valuable insights into the numerous challenges students face. Taylor strives to make a positive impact on the lives of students, and her academic and professional endeavors has supported her in continuing to achieve this vision.
Julia Amoo: Dr. Wallace E. Boston School of Business, Graduate
Julia Amoo will graduate from AMU in June 2024 with a master’s degree in human resource management. She is a dedicated professional with a diverse background in information technology and human resource management, and she holds a bachelor’s degree in information technology from Ghana Technology University College.
As the acting head of the human resource department at an insurance firm from 2016 to 2017, Julia discovered her passion for human resources. She decided to pursue a master’s degree in human resource management to further her expertise in the field.
Julia currently serves in the U.S. Army as a personnel operations specialist. During her academic journey, Julia served as the Vice President of Community Relations for the University’s chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), where she actively contributes to the advancement of HR practices and professional development.
Nmachi Okere: Health Sciences, Graduate
Nmachi Okere earned a master of public health (MPH) degree from AMU in February 2024. She also holds a bachelor’s degree from Barry University with minors in chemistry and military science.
Throughout her master’s program, she demonstrated a keen intellect and a solid commitment to addressing public health challenges. Her academic achievements reflect her dedication to scholarship and her desire to contribute meaningfully to the health and well-being of communities.
Nmachi currently works as a support medical operations logistics officer in the Army. She is committed to making a positive impact in the field of public health. Currently, Nmachi is pursuing a doctoral degree in public health at George Washington University.
Nmachi’s academic achievements, leadership skills, and dedication to public service make her an asset to the public health field and our nation’s military. As she continues her educational journey and prepares to embark on a career in public health research and practice, Nmachi is poised to address some of the most pressing health challenges facing society today. Her commitment to excellence and passion for improving health outcomes inspire her peers and colleagues alike.
Luis Revilla: Security and Global Studies, Graduate
Luis earned a master’s degree in intelligence studies from AMU in August 2023, graduating with a GPA of 3.92. An immigrant from Lima, Peru, Luis also holds a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with concentrations in sociology and military science.
Luis has dedicated his time and effort to making a positive impact through volunteer work. His efforts include translating medical and dental instructions for Spanish-speaking patients, counseling teenage students about healthy decision-making, and coordinating the distribution of essential school supplies for children.
Luis has also organized athletic competitions for intellectually disabled kids. After 20 years in the U.S. Army, he retired as an officer and currently works as a military contractor for the U.S. government, providing intelligence training to airmen, marines, sailors, and soldiers.
Suzannah Loehr: STEM, Graduate
Suzannah Loehr earned a master’s degree in environmental policy and management and a concentration in fish and wildlife management from AMU in April 2024. Suzannah has a lifelong interest in the field of environmental conservation, especially in land and species management.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in geosciences with a concentration in natural resources and conservation from Southern New Hampshire University. She currently works as an environmental physical science for the U.S. Air Force and gained exposure to a variety of environmental media from a federal viewpoint.
Suzannah aspires to teach and plans to continue her education through by pursuing a doctoral degree program focused on global environmental issues.
Tyler Bailey: Arts, Humanities and Education, Undergraduate
Tyler Bailey earned a bachelor’s degree in military history with a GPA of 3.975 and a concentration in American military history from AMU in April 2024. His enthusiasm for military history is rooted in his life as a North Carolinian, where he’s been inspired, captivated and impassioned by the 250+ years of rich history that encompass his home state.
Tyler is a member of Phi Gamma Mu International Honor Society as well as Sigma Alpha Phi and the National Society of Leadership and Success. He plans to continue his education and pursue a master’s degree.
Beyond academics, Tyler volunteers as a living historian, research assistant and historic tour guide at national parks. Ultimately, he plans to become a historic interpreter or instructor, so that he can continue to share his passion and love for American military history with others.
Emily Helton: Dr. Wallace E. Boston School of Business, Undergraduate
Emily Helton earned a bachelor’s degree in human resource management from AMU in April 2024. She maintained a GPA of 3.76.
Emily is the first in her family to attain a higher education degree, and her true passion is aiding others in their pursuit of knowledge. Her goal is to become a professor, shaping the next generation of business leaders.
Emily currently serves as a public affairs specialist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She also spent six years as a command-and-control battle management operator, instructing and supporting the training of the Air Force’s top aviators.
Emily serves as an inspiration to her entire family, exemplifying the rewards of hard work and dedication. She eagerly anticipates the challenges the future holds, the milestones awaiting her, and the countless memories to be made on her lifelong journey, fueled by the unwavering love and support of her family.
Emma Myers: Health Sciences, Undergraduate
Emma Myers graduated summa cum laude from AMU in February 2024 with a bachelor of applied science in health sciences. She is a dedicated individual with a strong background in healthcare, public service and military service.
Emma has worked as a volunteer emergency medical technician and firefighter. For her dedication to community service, she was awarded the Presidential Outstanding Service Award in January 2021.
Emma also served in the U.S. Navy as a master-at-arms. After her military separation, she became a gastroenterology endoscopy technician at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, assisting in gastrointestinal procedures and providing vital support to healthcare professionals. Her dedication to patient care and well-being earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues.
Emma is currently a police officer at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In the future, she plans to attend nursing school. She is committed to making a positive impact in the lives of others through her work, volunteerism and future endeavors in nursing.
John DeStefano, Jr.: Security and Global Studies, Undergraduate
In December 2023, John DeStefano graduated from AMU with a 4.0 GPA. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a concentration in law enforcement organizational leadership.
While attending AMU, John was a member of the Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences, the Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honor Society, the Golden Key International Honour Society, and The National Society of Leadership and Success.
A native of Elizabeth, New Jersey, John moved to Arizona at 27. John is a Captain with the Marana Police Department (MPD), located just outside Tucson, Arizona. John has been with MPD for over 24 years, during which time he has held various assignments.
John holds an associate of applied science degree in electromechanical engineering/robotics and attended the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command. He is currently applying to the FBI National Academy and plans to begin working towards a master’s degree this summer.
Jeremiah Blum: STEM, Undergraduate
Jeremiah Blum received a bachelor’s degree in information technology from APU, graduating summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA. He also completed a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from APU in 2018, graduating cum laude with a 3.5 GPA.
Beyond academia, Jeremiah has dedicated himself to community service. He has been a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, delivering meals and providing support to local seniors.
Mary Kim Ward Resilience and Service Award
The Mary Kim Ward Resilience and Service Award is given to a student who demonstrates resilience, patience, and unwavering determination. To qualify, the winner must make an impact on public service, social justice, and inclusion while working to complete a degree.
This year, we could not choose just one winner. As a result, we chose a winner from each school:
- Victoria Sengelman (AMU)
- Blagoy Pongoncheff (APU)
Victoria Sengelman
Victoria Sengelman earned a bachelor’s degree in intelligence studies magna cum laude from AMU in 2024. She also holds an associate degree in paralegal technology from Central Community College.
Victoria has been in the U.S. Navy since 2012. She has held several ranks, including PACT Seaman, Ships Signals Exploitation Equipment Increment Foxtrot Operator, Work Center Supervisor and Japan Signals Analysis Lab COMINT Analyst. Her deployments have included several ships, and she has worked in Florida, Spain, and Libya.
During her military service, Victoria won multiple awards. She was Junior Sailor of the Quarter (fourth quarter of 2018), Junior Sailor of the Year (2019) and USO Servicemember of the Year (2019). Victoria also received the Intelligence Collection Award in 2016 and the US-Japan Navy Friendship Association (JANAFA) Award in 2020.
Blagoy Pogoncheff
Blagoy Pogoncheff graduated summa cum laude from APU with a bachelor’s degree in military history. His interest in history was inspired by his grandparents’ experiences in the Balkan Wars, World War I and World War II.
He is currently a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army, forward operating and supporting NATO operations conducted in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
Blagoy has also been the head human resources administrative manager for the NATO Communications and Information Agency. In that role, he maintained and supported administrative functions for over 94 allied personnel across five countries while assisting in the accountability of more than $5 million dollars’ worth of equipment.
Blagoy has served on multiple overseas tours, supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, allied operations supporting Ukraine, and other operations, including Operation Control (OPCON) while stationed in South Korea. He holds two Military Occupational Specialties, enabling him to work with United States allies in several contingency locations.
Blagoy holds several military decorations, including four Military Outstanding Volunteer Service medals for his volunteer work while serving. By request of the United States Air Force Military and Family Life Consultants (MFLC), he conducted historical research and presented it for United States military personnel entering his area of operation.
To provide smooth transitions for United States personnel entering a new culture, he improved their cultural awareness through a presentation of historical information, which resulted in a safe and secure acclimation to the local Middle Eastern area of operations. He has volunteered overseas for over 450 hours in the MFLC program.
Blagoy also advocates for the Special Olympics, historical battlefields and their preservation, the conservation of public waterways and lands, and the veteran community. Along with his family, Blagoy has volunteered for the special needs communities and other various groups, enhancing the lives of many communities through their efforts.
Blagoy also holds an associate degree in history from Lansing Community College and plans to continue his education by enrolling in the master’s degree in history at APU. His professional goal is to either work for the Department of Defense as a historian or to teach, either at the University or in person at a local college or university in North Carolina after his military separation.
Student Speaker Award Winners
Each year, the Student Speaker Award is given annually to students who will speak at their graduating class ceremony. This year, the winners are:

George Linen, Jr.
George graduated from AMU in December 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in sport and health sciences. He also holds additional degrees, including two associate degrees from the Community College of the Air Force.
George is currently a military education instructor for enlisted personnel in the U.S. Air Force. He is a multifaceted individual with a passion for education, community engagement and the transformative power of art. As a TEDx Speaker, poet and published author, George exemplifies the ethos of a well-rounded individual who not only excels in his military service but also embraces creativity as a force for positive change.
George also contributes to local communities by organizing art events in the U.S., Germany and Portugal. These events serve as platforms for cultural exchange and creative expression, fostering connections that transcend geographical boundaries.
A firm believer in the principle of “paying it forward,” he established a scholarship at his high school alma mater and has personally awarded a graduating senior with $250 each year since 2020. This commitment to education reflects George’s dedication to empowering the next generation and making a lasting impact on their academic journeys.
In the future, George aspires to extend his impact further by combining his artistic endeavors with a career in physical therapy. With a vision to heal hearts through art and restore lives through therapeutic care, he seeks to give people not only inspiration but also the opportunity to reclaim their lives.
Apiluck (Mann) Kongsomboonvech
Mann Kongsomboonvech graduated in June 2024 with a master of business administration degree from AMU. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in science from the United States Air Force Academy.
Mann is a multi-faceted, driven professional with a diverse background and a passion for excellence. A first-generation Thai-Chinese immigrant, he brings a unique perspective to everything he does.
He currently serves in the U.S. Air Force as an acquisitions officer to demonstrate his leadership, strategic thinking and a commitment to service. His dedication to excellence has earned him recognition and respect within the military community.
Mann is a multi-talented individual with a love for acting, modeling, and voice-over work. His passion for the arts led him to pursue opportunities in the entertainment industry, where he showcases his creativity and versatility.
In addition to his professional and academic achievements, Mann is actively involved in his community and strives to make a positive impact wherever he goes. His ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and his dedication to making a difference set him apart as a leader and role model.
Alumni Service and Distinguished Graduate Award Winners
The Alumni Service Award recognizes a graduate who provided distinctive service to the community and the University by using education and experience to support others.
The Distinguished Graduate Award recognizes an exceptional alumnus or alumna who embodies the ideals of the University’s mission through personal and professional efforts.
James Hodgman is the winner of this year’s Alumni Service Award, and Erik Fortenberry is the winner of this year’s Distinguished Graduate Award.
James Hodgman
James is a U.S. Air Force veteran and an adjunct professor with the University, teaching courses in business management and entrepreneurship. During his time in the Air Force, he protected bases in the United States, Germany and the Middle East.
In 2009, he transitioned into public affairs, serving as a photojournalist and documenting the Air Force’s mission in four countries. His military career spanned 20 years and he served at bases in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa before retiring from the Air Force in March 2023.
James earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies with a concentration in mass communication from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a master’s degree in management from American Military University. He also holds a management certification and was recently accepted into Liberty University’s doctoral communication program.
Passionate about community service and giving back, James has served as a tactical combat casualty care instructor, a resiliency instructor, and the emcee for several events during his military career. Today, he is a crisis counselor with Crisis Text Line, the athletic director for the Solano County (California) chapter of Team Red, White & Blue, the president of Vanden High School’s Theater Arts Boosters, and a member of Solano County’s Suicide Prevention Coalition.
He believes in living life to the fullest and living by these words from Tony Horton, the creator of P90 X: “Do your best and forget the rest.”
Erik Fortenberry
Erik Fortenberry is the holder of multiple degrees. He holds an associate degree in applied science from the Community College of the Air Force and a bachelor’s degree in transportation and logistics management from AMU. Currently, Erik is pursuing a master of public administration degree at AMU.
Erik is currently a superintendent with the Military and Family Readiness Center of the U.S. Air Force. His 18-year military career has taken him all over the world, including several deployments to the Middle East.
Currently, Erik plans to finish his degree and then continue on to a doctoral degree to teach and to study the effects of post-traumatic stress on veterans in the workforce. As a teacher, he hopes to pass on his love of learning to his two children and others.
Outstanding Campus Leader
The Outstanding Leader Award recognizes campus leaders who contributed significantly to a student organization or co-curricular program. They have gone above and beyond to engage members and contribute to the student experience.
Lauren Stauffer – Arts, Humanities and Education
Lauren Stauffer graduated from AMU in December 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a GPA of 3.78. Her interest in military psychology was inspired by her relatives, who fought in various wars including World War I, World War II, Vietnam and Korea.
From a young age, Lauren loved psychology and helping people. She currently works in order management for the American Red Cross and is a volunteer in their Services to the Armed Forces Department.
In addition, Lauren is the President of the University’s Psychology Club and the Vice President of Active Minds. When Lauren is not volunteering, she always has her hands in something military-related, researching family military history or preserving her veterans’ legacies.
Nicholas Rinell – Dr. Wallace E. Boston School of Business
Nicholas L. Rinell will graduate from AMU in December 2024 with a master of business administration degree. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in cyber security management and policy from the University of Maryland Global Campus.
Nicholas has served the U.S. Marine Corps for over 20 years and works as an adjunct faculty instructor in the Enlisted College Distance Education Program at Camp Pendleton South in California. Over the years, he has served the Marine Corps in various capacities, earning promotions and commendations for his exceptional leadership and dedication.
During his tenure, he played pivotal roles in MACS units in Okinawa, Cherry Point and Camp Pendleton. His expertise in radar maintenance and operations was instrumental in the smooth functioning of these units. Notably, he had multiple deployments, including a tour in Iraq.
Nicholas has earned numerous military awards, which include two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and a Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
Larissa Mallard – Dr. Wallace E. Boston School of Business
Larissa Mallard earned a master’s degree in transportation and logistics management with a concentration in reverse logistics management from AMU in 2017. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from West Virginia University, with a minor in history and a concentration in health psychology.
Larissa has crafted a life of service, education and leadership. She served the U.S. Army for over 22 years, retiring as a Logistics Warrant Officer with the esteemed rank of CW4. Currently, she plans to continue her education with an MBA, specializing in event planning management.
Larissa is deeply involved in her community. She serves as the President of the University’s Alumni Advisory Council and as the Vice President of the African American Learning Inclusion and Guidance Network (AALIGN).
Larissa is also a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society and serves as a peer mentor. She is an active volunteer, dedicating her time to organizations such as Girl Scouts, Toastmasters International and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
Her commitment to service extends far beyond her professional and academic endeavors. Larissa continues to inspire others through her dedication to service, leadership and lifelong learning. Her journey exemplifies the power of perseverance, passion, and purpose in shaping a life of meaning and significance.
Chapter of the Year Award: Society for Defense and Strategic Studies
The Chapter of the Year Award recognizes an organization whose members have worked extensively to create an environment that fosters leadership, engagement, service, and commemoration with its members. This year, the Chapter of the Year Award went to the Society of Defense and Strategic Studies (SDSS), a student organization dedicated to helping its members in fields such as national security, defense, intelligence and foreign affairs.
In 2024, SDSS prepared members for the professional world by emphasizing critical thinking and skill development through publications, podcasts, lectures, and webinars. SDSS also held fundraisers and created partnerships to demonstrate a commitment to broader societal issues. Through the creation of its Fulcrum Global website and various platforms, SDSS facilitates knowledge exchange and advocacy.
Legacy Project Award: R.E.A.D. Book Club
This award recognizes an organization that has created and implemented a project that continues to build from year to year. Through their efforts and dedication, the R.E.A.D. Book Club implemented and set a high standard for their organization and others.
Through the Random Acts of Reading project, the R.E.A.D. Book Club had a profound impact on communities across the U.S. and the University community. By promoting reading and literacy through various initiatives such as volunteering for LibriVox, contributing to Little Free Libraries, and leaving books in random locations, R.E.A.D. Book Club members enhanced access to books and strengthened community ties.
Strongly committed to improving literacy, the R.E.A.D. Book Club also created newsletters and social media promotions. This organization also funded projects through the Smithsonian Adopt-a-Book program and Donors’ Choose website and provided reading libraries for classrooms in underserved areas such as Arkansas and Louisiana.
Outstanding New Student Organization Award: Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science
The Outstanding New Student Organization Award recognizes an organization that has established a positive presence at the University and has collaborated with other student organizations or university departments. This year, the award goes to the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) for their work.
SACNAS promotes minority representation, particularly among Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans, in STEM fields. This year, SACNAS achieved remarkable milestones through the leadership of President Bridget Kimsey and Vice President Pedro Maldonado.
SACNAS members attended the national SACNAS conference and engaged with others on social media sites promoting underrepresented students. SACNAS also hosted meetings and other events for its members and facilitated connections with diverse mentors through initiatives like “Cafecitos con Cientificos.” (Coffees with Scientists)
The organization also promoted notable achievements of Chicanos, Hispanics, and Native Americans in STEM globally and shared resources like NOAA’s federal job application training videos. It also facilitated conference presentations and field trips, including international trips to the Southeastern Council of Latin American Studies (SECOLAS) Conference in Antigua, Guatemala.
Also, SACNAS actively contributed to the university’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) initiative, and Dr. Drexler promoted the organization in blog articles. The Facebook page and website of SACNAS served as platforms for community engagement and information sharing.
SACNAS received recognition at both the national and international levels, with President Bridget Kimsey noted as a new chapter leader at the SACNAS National Conference and Vice President Pedro Maldonado recognized for his presentation at the SECOLAS Conference. Faculty advisors Dr. Michelle Watts and Dr. Kristi Drexler were also acknowledged for their contributions.
