January is the beginning of National Mentoring Month 2025, a time to recognize the major impact mentorship can have on your professional and personal life. Whether you’re seeking to become a mentor or a mentee, there are three main ways you can get involved in mentoring.
#1: Become a Mentor
One of the most impactful ways to celebrate National Mentoring Month 2025 is to become a mentor. Mentorship isn’t just about offering guidance to a mentee, but building a meaningful, professional relationship that fosters professional growth and confidence.
To become a mentor, consider reaching out to an organization such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of America or your local community center. Another option is to join professional mentoring programs through LinkedIn or industry-specific networks.
A third way to become a mentor is to access the University’s CareerLink program by logging into the University Directory. At the University, we welcome outstanding graduate students (with a 3.50 GPA or higher and at least 12 credit hours) and alumni as mentors.
CareerLink is not only a way to quickly search for and connect with like-minded mentors and mentees. It also serves as a job board and career resource center.
#2: Find a Mentor during National Mentoring Month 2025
Mentorship isn’t just for giving; it’s also about receiving guidance from someone with more experience. Whether you’re starting a new job, returning to school, or working through a personal challenge, finding a mentor can help you navigate these life experiences with confidence. If finding a mentor is something you’ve been considering, there’s no time like National Mentoring Month 2025 to take the leap.
Finding a mentor is easy. You can use the University’s CareerLink or use other ways of finding a mentor:
- Join online mentoring platforms or ask your local community center if it offers a mentoring program.
- Reach out to someone you admire and ask if that person would be open to mentoring you.
#3: Celebrate ‘Thank Your Mentor Day’
January 25 is Thank Your Mentor Day, a special time to express gratitude to the people who have guided and supported you. Acknowledging their role in your academic or professional journey can be deeply meaningful whether your mentor is a teacher, coach, boss, or friend. It’s a great way to round out National Mentoring Month 2025.
How can you show your appreciation to your mentor? Here are some suggestions:
- Write a heartfelt note or email to your mentor.
- Share a post about your mentor on social media using #ThankYourMentor and #MentoringMonth.
- Pay it forward by becoming a mentor yourself.
National Mentoring Month 2025 is a great opportunity to work on your academic and professional development. Whether you want to become a mentor or mentee, please seek out the University’s mentoring resources.
