Interview with AMU Alumna, Arinola Gabrielle Awosika

As a nod to Heart Health Month in 2016, we interviewed a student who battled heart disease and won. After a successful surgery for heart disease, Arinola decided to give back to her community by becoming a community speaker, educator and healthy lifestyle advocate. She is also a member of the WomenHeart Organization, the only national coalition that helps women with heart disease.

I am looking ahead at the many opportunities and possibilities that I can achieve with my degree. I was the recipient of the President’s Award in 2015 and I graduated with honors. These recognitions have motivated me to establish “Rebuilding Health” in Nepal. This nonprofit works on improving community health through public-private partnership and community engagement for sustainable health outcomes.

Interview with AMU Alumnus, Jason McClaren

My goal as a child was to do 20 years in the Air Force, retire, and teach JROTC, but after seven years as an Air Force firefighter that was cut short due to a death in my family. After relocating, I had a choice to start at the bottom of a municipal fire department and work my way back up the ladder or pursue my education. I chose the latter, getting my bachelor’s degree in fire science.

There were many reasons that I decided to pursue my master’s in history through AMU. First and foremost, I have a passion for history and all that it entails. I believe that one cannot be too educated about the historical past or we may end up repeating some of the same mistakes. Secondly, I chose to obtain this degree because it would aid me on my journey to become a professor of history at the university level. This has always been a dream of mine; therefore, this degree is yet another stepping stone towards success in my future.

As a student at APU, I was afforded the opportunity to get a great deal of practice with my writing. During my 28-year leadership career in retail, I gained many insights that I wanted to share in the form of a published work. When the time came to write my book, I felt confident, prepared, and inspired to begin the process.

More than half of recent college graduates in America are under- or unemployed and that means it takes more than simply having a degree to get a decent job. Students need to start marketing themselves early on in their college careers so they have more connections and better opportunities once that diploma is hanging on the wall.
