Last year, the Space Education and Strategic Applications Conference (SESA), hosted by American Public University System (APUS), showcased industry thought leaders and academicians from across the galaxy to discuss some of our most pressing challenges in space.
This year marks the second annual conference and it’s shaping up to be an epic event.
The purpose of the SESA conference is to promote multidisciplinary conversation about issues related to both military and civilian space, at the intersection between science, technology and policy. On that front, they have accomplished their mission.
As an attendee at last year’s inaugural event, I sat in on presentations on space education, astrobiology, space entrepreneurship, space law, engineering, ethics and more, from some of the brightest minds in the country. Of note was a special session featuring The Honorable Barbara Barrett, then-Secretary of the Air Force.
Her speech focused on the importance of the newest branch of the U.S. military, Space Force, and its role in the increasingly competitive and crowded warfighting domain above our heads.
This year’s event promises to be just as insightful as more and more space experts sign on to present as speakers and panelists. Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, last year’s event was held virtually.
As a speaker on veterans’ topics, I enjoy the opportunity to speak “in person” as often as I can. However, there is a silver lining to speaking virtually: Many attendees who would not have been able to travel and attend were able to tune-in and benefit from the knowledge of SESA’s expert presenters.
Did you miss last year’s conference? Conference presenters have the opportunity to submit a full manuscript of their presentation for publication in the Space Education & Strategic Applications (SESA) journal either prior to or following the conference.

This year’s event takes place on Thursday and Friday, September 23-24, 2021. More information can be found on the conference’s program page.
Featured speakers currently include Colonel Eileen Collins, the first female to pilot a U.S. spacecraft with the Discovery shuttle flight in 1995, and the first female commander on the 1999 Columbia shuttle flight, as well as Dr. Robert Zubrin, the President of Pioneer Astronautics, an aerospace R&D company located in Lakewood, Colorado. Since founding Pioneer Astronautics in January 1996, Dr. Zubrin has served as the Principal Investigator for over 50 research and development projects in areas including spacecraft and launch vehicle propulsion systems, Mars and Lunar in-situ resource utilization technology, EVA life support and propulsion, and robotic exploration systems.
