At the end of 2023, the African American Learning, Inclusion, and Guidance Network (AALIGN), one of the student organizations at the heart of the University community, had much to celebrate. Last year was marked by impactful events showcasing our commitment to fostering a sense of community, encouraging knowledge-sharing, and promoting personal growth among our members through newsletters and other events.
Connecting Beyond Borders
On February 7, 2023, AALIGN hosted a collaborative Black History Month celebration. This event was a gathering of minds, an opportunity for members to connect, share experiences, and engage in meaningful conversations that transcended geographical boundaries.
Our theme for this celebration was “Black Resistance: A Journey Through Time.” Eight other student organizations joined us in celebrating Black History Month.
At the end of February 2023, AALIGN hosted a discussion with a guest speaker. Writer, comedian, speaker, and community advocate Kimberly Gold presented “Are We Accidentally Racist?”, prompting an interactive and knowledgeable discussion among audience members.
In addition, AALIGN actively participated in Black Children’s Book Week, promoting the love for reading and amplifying diverse voices in literature.

Nurturing Well-Being
In May 2023, AALIGN hosted another guest speaker to observe Mental Health Awareness Month. The presentation, “Navigating your Self-Care & Wellness Journey” with Dr. Letitia Johnson-Arnold was extremely informative and emphasized the importance of self-care to AALIGN members and others.
AALIGN also participated in the University’s 2023 Commencement weekend activities, supporting the Alumni Advisory Council (AAC) and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Council during Gradfest. For its efforts, AALIGN was highlighted in an article written by Dr. Aikyna Finch, a DEIB advisor and faculty member.
Celebrating History and Culture
In June, AALIGN celebrated Juneteenth by hosting a week of virtual events consisting of a reflection submission, meet and greet, and a museum tour. The week culminated with a Juneteenth Virtual Game Night, the brainchild of AALIGN President Larissa Mallard and Vice President Gabriel Hamilton.
Community Service
During the last two years, AALIGN has participated in Wreaths Across America, demonstrating its commitment to community service and honoring the sacrifices of fallen veterans. This annual event that AALIGN regularly supports.
Other Events
AALIGN member Gabriel Hamilton published his first book, “Invested in Me,” intended to inspire young African American girls. AALIGN held a book signing to celebrate Gabriel’s achievement.
New Leaders for AALIGN
On December 23, 2023, AALIGN held chapter elections and elected new leaders. The new leaders are:
- Gabriel Hamilton – President
- Larissa Mallard – Vice President
- Dee Anna Swanson – Secretary
AALIGN’s Plans for 2024
AALIGN is gearing up for exciting events in 2024, starting with celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a chapter newsletter sent out on February 14. They will be followed by quarterly newsletters and a membership drive.
Many events in 2023 defined the spirit of AALIGN. With dedicated members and a visionary leadership team, AALIGN is poised for another year of success, shared achievements, and enduring camaraderie. Here’s to the journey ahead!

Michael Davis, Jr., is currently seeking a master’s degree in political science with a concentration in American politics and government at the University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Houston and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Texas. Michael is a seasoned educator with a passion for youth programs and expanding educational opportunities. With 11 years of experience in both education and non-profits, he has dedicated his career to empowering young minds and advocating for equitable access to quality education. Michael brings expertise and insight to his work, striving to enact positive change within educational systems. Beyond his professional endeavors, he is deeply committed to community building and spends his free time immersed in reading, researching, and writing.
