Don’t Fight the Urge to Write: Download Help

Love to write? I do, but it’s not as easy as sitting in front of the computer and letting loose. There are things we call distractions that can pull us away from the joy (for me) of writing. With technology being what it is today, instead of just telling you to unplug any device that doesn’t directly relate to writing your paper or discussion post that’s due soon, I have a better solution…more technology.

There are some great tools on the Web that you can install for free to keep distractions at bay while you get your writing finished. Here are a handful of these great tools that you should consider downloading:

  • Q10 (Windows users)
Portable writing tool with an interface that includes nothing but a tiny bar at the bottom that shows the character, word, and page count. It takes over your entire screen, has a timer alarm, notes section, target count, and programmable page count formula. *Won first place in a poll conducted by Lifehacker blog.
  • Ommwriter (Mac users)
Just like the name the focus is on creating a relaxing atmosphere for the creative energy to flow through your fingertips to the keyboard. The free version comes with three visual and audio themes providing a zen-like environment and text editor.
  • FocusWriter (Windows/Mac/Linux users)
Like the others this program is a fullscreen word processor that autosaves your progress, helping you to focus better on your craft. You can alter the “environment” with different fonts, colors, and background images to create whatever ambiance brings you your muse. It gives you live stats according to your daily goals and progress.
