Need a Reference? Don’t List Your Spouse

If you’re looking for a great reference, don’t list your spouse or significant other. What employers are looking for are slightly more non-biased parties. You can of course list previous bosses or co-workers that have nothing but great things to say about you; in fact, you want your references to speak highly of you. But just like you wouldn’t list your mother or father on the form, and typically most employers will ask you to list at least 3 references you aren’t related to, you wouldn’t list your spouse or girlfriend/boyfriend.

One last thing to note before listing your best references, don’t send in a picture of yourself OR your significant other. Unless you’re looking for a position as a model, sending in a picture could potentially hurt your chances of getting the job.
