Tip of the Day: Treat Your Performance Review Like Your Resume

Whether you know it or not, you should always be promoting yourself. Your performance review is a great time to talk about your best qualities, and accomplishments, but what about your faults? How honest should you really be when you’re asked what you dislike about your job?

If you are truly miserable at your job hopefully you aren’t waiting to share that with your superior during your annual performance review. If you keep track of yourself throughout the year you should have a pretty good indication on where you stand in your department and with your boss. And just like you wouldn’t tell a potential employer what you hated about your last job, you shouldn’t tell your boss now what you don’t want to be doing. For example, everyone gets stuck with trivial tasks that could easily be passed from salaried employee (you) to an intern. Your boss knows this isn’t something ideal for you to work on, but the point is it needs to get done.

[When in Doubt, Keep it To Yourself]

Instead focus on being constructive about what you may be uncomfortable with in your job. If trivial tasks is really getting in the way of you blossoming then say that you would like to be challenged more.
