Tip of the Day: When You Make a Mistake, Own It

We all mess up, some more than others, and a high number of people on a daily basis. The key to getting past a screw up is handling it with grace, and getting over it.

You know you hate when someone on your team completely lets everyone down, but they don’t take the blame for it, so don’t take their lead and do the same. Even CEO’s make mistakes, but if they’re good they can recover from it. Instead of trying to spin the problem in another direction claim it as your own, and offer a solution for it getting fixed. One-up yourself and go ahead and correct the situation and let people know then that the issue has been resolved and what you’ll do next time to ensure history doesn’t repeat itself.

If you send an email to the wrong person, let’s hope it isn’t laced with colorful expletives, because you can sometimes get yourself out of that mess. Do NOT use recall in Outlook, it doesn’t work, and if the recipients already opened the email then you’re small problem just blew up into a bigger one. Resend the email with “Correction” in the subject line to call attention to the error; better that you pick up on it before someone else does.
