Tip of the Day: Problem Solve and Self-Soothe When You Get Stuck

If you’ve ever fallen and scraped your knee, or slammed your finger in the cabinet and yelped out in pain then you know something about self soothing. The older we get, the better we adapt to situations where our impulse is to ask for help instead of solving the problems ourselves. Online learningis similar in a way. You don’t have a physical presence which verifies your class attendance, instead you have discussion posts, forum threads, and papers. Question is…when you don’t know the answer to something do you first consider putting a “band-aid” on the situation, or do you leave it up to a reliable friend to get a resolution?

[Spy on Yourself to See How Productive You’re Being.]

Try the self-soothing method. Babies do it, people without ready access to manuals do it, so why not try it? Online learning gives you more independence, and retrieving your own solution (from Google most times) is rewarding and it can make a better impression on your professor; not to mention it’s nice when you’re the “know it all” in class. So give it a try. Beat out your frustration by taking a break from the task and coming back to it with a fresh set of eyes. It’ll feel good knowing you got to the conclusion on your own.
